Back to Work

Yesterday was my first day back to work since the 19th. It was difficult leaving Stephanie, even in the very capable hands of her mom. If I had enough vacation I would probably have taken off long enough to be done with radiation even. Work has been great to us. First of all they gave Stephanie a job, then when all this happened they have given both of us all the time off we need for appointments and such. They have been much better than one of the girls in ICU waiting room. Her dad had emergency open heart surgery with 5 bypasses, and when she told her office she would be going to Baton Rouge her boss told her "Well this is a really busy time". Later they sent her a text message asking if she would be in the next day. That really makes me appreciate these guys all the more. Regardless, now that I'm back from my twelve days off I don't really know what to do with myself. It's been difficult getting back in the swing of things, especially since most of what I did every day is located an hour away from here, and someone else is covering for me right now. So Im stuck in the office doing inside work, which is very hard after spending every day outside for teh past 6 months. Stephanie continues to do better. Yesterday at Dr. Kaplan's we learned Stephanie will have the permanent skin graft done to her arm Monday June 9th, and a week later will be off the wound vac (one less tube, yippee!). Today is also the start of chemo for oneour friends in Siloam, you can go to her blog and see striking similarities between our two stories. She is Vicki Dees under our friends column. Please pray for her during this time as well.
Today we see Dr. Pou for a follow-up and to ask her when Stephanie can get off this high dollar food. It costs $30/day to feed her. That's like going out to eat for every meal, according to one of my co-workers. I told Stephanie she should think of it that way, and when she's better we won't have to out to eat, after all she'll have eaten out every meal for several weeks.
We are planning on discharging ourselves from home health on Tuesday so we can start speech therapy on Thursday. We will find out the radiation treatment plan from Dr. Fields on Friday. On Tueday we will meet with the medical oncologist to see if he reccommends anything in addition to or different from Dr. Fields.

Hey, Warner and Stephanie! The last time I saw the two of you was also the first time I met Stephanie - at the wedding reception at your Grammy's house almost two years ago. This past weekend I saw Joan, Josie, Jack, and Glen and Glen told me what has been happening in your lives. Last night she sent me the blog address and I read the whole thing, including comments - couldn't tear myself away until I'd finished reading it all.

Needless to say, the Dowling family is praying for you both now, and will continue to do so. I am so amazed and encouraged by your faith and trust in God - that He is sovereign and that He is good. And it's so exciting to read from your posts the many ways that God is tenderly providing for all your needs at this time - including a sympathetic workplace.

We'll keep praying and reading your updates.

The Greatest Test

"I know, my God, that You test the heart and are pleased with integrity." - 1 Chronicles 29:17a

God tests His children to know what is in their hearts. God's desire for each of His children is to walk in relationship with Him, to uphold His righteousness and integrity. It is a high calling that we will fail to achieve without complete dependence on Him.

The greatest tests come not in great adversities, but in great prosperity. For it is in prosperity that we begin to lose the sensitivity to sin in our lives. Adversity motivates us to righteousness out of a desire to see our adversity changed. Prosperity fails to provide this motivation for obedience. We fall into a satisfaction and confidence in life that is based on our prosperity rather than on God.

"He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze." - 2 Samuel 22:35

David was a mighty warrior, and God described him as a man after His own heart. God took David through a training ground that could be looked on as cruel and unusual punishment by many a person. God chose him at a young age to be the next king, yet King Saul rejected him and hunted him down. David was a fugitive for many years. He had uprisings in his own family, and he had relationship problems. He had a life of extreme ups and downs. He certainly did not have a life free of problems; he made mistakes. He was human like all of us, yet he learned from his mistakes and repented when he failed. This was David's training ground; it made the man. Without these hardships, it is doubtful David would have accomplished what he did.

Toward the end of David's life, he recounted his relationship with God. It is a sermon on God's ways of dealing with a servant leader.

It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; He enables me to stand on the heights. He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. You give me Your shield of victory; You stoop down to make me great. You broaden the path beneath me, so that my ankles do not turn (2 Samuel 22:33-37).

God was David's source for everything. God gave him the ability to achieve the many extraordinary things in his life. It was a lifelong training ground that moved him from one plateau to another, often dropping into a ravine of despair and hopelessness from time to time. These are God's ways. They drive us deeper and deeper into the heart of Him who has prepared a way for us. Let God take you to the heights or depths He desires for you. He never promised smooth sailing during the trip, but He did promise to be the captain and companion along the way.

Those in Whom God Delights

"His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor His delight in the legs of a man; the Lord delights in those who fear Him, who put their hope in His unfailing love." - Psalm 147:10

The Lord has a different measuring stick [from the world's measure of what "should be"]. The Lord is not impressed with your ability or what you can do for Him. Only one thing delights Him-people who fear Him and put their hope in His unfailing love. What does it mean to fear God and place our hope in His love? It means we acknowledge that God is the source of all that we are. He is the one who gives us the ability to [do anything we do]. He does not want us to look to our abilities, but to His abilities. Sometimes it is difficult to balance these two perspectives. However, if we ask God to show us how to maintain this balance, He will do it. Put your hope in His unfailing love today. Then you will know that your heavenly Father is looking on you as a proud Father.

Warner and Stephanie, I get these daily devotionals via email. I saved three of them (and made some tweeks to fit in sharing with you) thinking that maybe you may get some comfort reading them to confirm the knowing that God is the One you are to lean on. Another devotional talks about Jacob wrestling with the angel and the angel touched the socket of his hip, crippling him, forcing him to lean on his staff/cane. The staff/cane symbolizes Jacob's leaning on God.

Just remember that God is the source of everything, and that He has a purpose for you, so beautiful that you cannot even imagine. He certainly has blessed you with such awesome attitudes, along with understanding employer/colleagues. Keep your eyes on Jesus and not on the circumstances; and then you will gain an eternal perspective on the "why?" of this trial you are going through right now. Others are right in saying that this will too come to pass.....just do not be weary and give up. Keep fighting the good fight. Do not be weary of doing good, you will reap the harvest.......

"Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I say rejoice." (note the word "always", which means not during only the prospering times, but also the times of trying, frustrating times. In other words, all the time rejoice in the Lord). Rejoice knowing that He is sovereign and in control.....

So it is good to hear you (Stephanie) get excited about getting pampered with your hair getting washed and getting to spend time with Reukie and Edgar; and to be proud of Warner being so awesome, in doing everything he can and will do to make sure you are comfortable.

Just two days ago, I cut two of the calla lilies that I grow out of the pots (the only successful gardening I ever achieved yet) and put them in a vase to honor both you and Warner. They are dark pink-tipped creamy white and so fresh and beautiful.

I hope you're getting STEAK through that tube! I have to tell you I am very oddly fascinated by this process of tube feedings...I just about badgered Hank to death when he was talking to you last night trying to get info--of course all he was interested in was the gore!
I'm happy you are home and improving daily. To quote the old blessing:
God is GREAT, God is GOOD!!!
We will continue to pray. We love you both!
